He was dismissed after an audio recording was circulated in which he was allegedly heard using offensive language about members of the Roman Curia. While a microphone was unintentionally left on ahead of a Christmas greeting, he reportedly said that they are all "assholes" and "faggots". On 4 January, VeronaNews.net reported that Vito Comencini (Popolo Veneto), a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, had issued a public letter expressing solidarity with the prelate. Yesterday I finished my lesson about five minutes early and told my students they could just sit and talk to each other until the bell. Almost immediately, a handful of phones came out. Within a few minutes, a few desks came to life — kids were looking one another in the eye, asking questions, laughing, building real conversations. It was genuinely heartwarming to watch.
