The Redemption of Man and the Rejection of “Holy Sex” A Patristic and Scholastic Disputation Against the Modern Exaltation of Carnal Pleasure “The first man Adam was made into a living soul; the last Adam into a quickening spirit.” —1 Corinthians 15:45 Prologue: The Question Before Us There is a fundamental question which must be asked before we speak of the holiness of sexual pleasure: What is man? And immediately after that: What became of man through the Fall? For if we begin with fallen man as though his present condition were the standard of human nature, we shall inevitably mistake the wounds of the Fall for the original design of God. This is precisely the danger in the modern exaltation of sexuality. The question is no longer merely: "Is marital intercourse lawful?" The Catholic tradition already answers that question. The more profound question is: "What ought the Christian to desire within the marital act?" And here a profound difference appears between the ascetical tradition …More
Saint Romanus, Martyr - August 9th SaintoftheDay He said the same thing before the tribunal that he had said everywhere else since his baptism: I am a Christian. He had been a Christian for perhaps one day. It was enough. One day of truth is sufficient for a martyr's crown. He could not understand how a man of flesh and blood could be tortured without opening his mouth to complain. Then he saw the Angel. That is always the order — first the inexplicable endurance, then the supernatural explanation. Faith works the same way. The faithful sins if his neighbor sins — that was Saint Matthias's saying. Romanus saw a neighbor suffering for Christ and could not remain indifferent. He converted on the spot. He was beheaded the next day. His neighbor's martyrdom was his baptism. Grace is contagious. He saw beside the tortured martyr a young man of incomparable grace and beauty wiping away the blood. No one else seemed to see him. That vision cost Romanus his life. He considered it well spent. The Lord Jesus cursed some cities of Galilee (Mt., XI, 20-24; Luke, X, 10-16) for their unbelief; as then in Judea, shortly before being killed, he also cursed Jerusalem as unfaithful and ready for Deicide (Mt., XXIV, 15; Luke, XIX, 43). Certainly Jesus did not desire the supreme spiritual evil, that is, the eternal damnation, of the unbelieving Jews of Galilee and Judea; in fact, it would have been seriously illicit and sinful; however, He asked for a certain material evil for them, but always for their conversion; as well as even asked for a punishment or a certain temporary and initial – spiritual evil of unfaithful Judaism, as long as it was not definitive and absolute, but rather so that it would serve as a moral lesson to him and spur him on to a greater spiritual good and true conversion (S. THOMAS AQUINAS, S. Th., II-II, q. 76). In the Gospel (Mt., both objectively and materially, exclaiming: “Woe to you ...!”. This is the objective or material curse. Furthermore, Jesus did not …More
Chapter XXVII. ~ The Fourth Dungeon The Boiling Kettle Amos iv. The days shall come when they shall lift you up on pikes, and what remains of you in boiling pots. Look into this little prison. In the middle of it there is a boy, a young man. He is silent; despair is on him. He stands straight up. His eyes are burning like two burning coals. Two long flames come out of his ears. His breathing is difficult. Sometimes he opens his mouth and breath of blazing fire rolls out of it. But listen! There is a sound just like that of a kettle boiling. Is it really a kettle which is boiling? No; then what is it? Hear what it is. The blood is boiling in the scalded veins of that boy. The brain is boiling and bubbling in his head. The marrow is boiling in his bones! Ask him, put the question to him, why is he thus tormented? His answer is, that when he was alive, his blood boiled to do very wicked things, and he did them, and it was for that he went to dancing-houses, public-houses, and theatres. Ask …More

Kansas diocese to establish formal seminary amid growth in priestly formation: The transition will more clearly define the Diocese of Wichita’s college formation program as a seminary while allowing seminarians to continue their studies at Newman University.
Early August already brings shelves of sinister Halloween imagery. Sir Christopher Lee once warned against dabbling in the occult. The Church has always known better. All Hallows Eve belongs to the saints, not to the enemies of God. A short reflection on what Satan can only ape, and how Catholics can take the holy day back.
[Saint Catherine of Genoa ~ XV-XVI Century; born: Genoa, Republic of Genoa/ died: Genoa, Republic of Genoa; (aged 62-63); Mystic; Spiritual Writer] Chapter XVI ~ THE SAINT SHOWS THAT THE SUFFERINGS OF THE SOULS IN PURGATORY DO NOT DESTROY THEIR PEACE OR THEIR JOY. I SEE that the souls in purgatory in the midst of their pains are sensible of doing two things : First, that they are suffering willingly ; for when they perceive their own deserts and God's Majesty, they think that He is treating them with great leniency in afflicting them as He does ; for had not goodness tempered justice with mercy through the satisfactions of the precious Blood of Jesus Christ, a thousand hells would have been the portion of a single sin through all eternity. Hence they suffer all their pains gladly, and would not rid them of a single pang, knowing that all is justly deserved and righteously ordained : they no more complain of God, so far as their will is concerned, than if they were in life eternal. Secondly …More
"Secondly, they are conscious of feeling positive satisfaction in beholding the love and mercy with which God orders His work within them. They are made sensible of these two facts at one and the same moment, and being in a state of grace, understand them as they are, each soul according to its capacity ; and they experience great happiness, which never grows less, but, on the contrary, goes on increasing the nearer they approach God."

Saturday, 9th August 1913 Daltons Testimony False, Girl Named on Stand Says, The Atlanta Georgian Atlanta Georgian August 9th, 1913 The Georgian today received from Miss Laura Atkinson of No. 30 Ella Street, one of the young women mentioned in C. B. Dalton's testimony, a letter denying absolutely that she had ever walked home with Dalton from the restaurant near the pencil factory, as he swore. Here is Miss Atkinson's letter in full: Editor The Georgian: Will you please allow me space to correct a statement made by Mr. C. B. Dalton in his testimony at the Frank trail and published in your paper yesterday? In answer to a question from Mr. Rosser as to whether he ever went to the pencil factory with any one except Miss Daisy Hopkins he said yes, he used to go to the Busy Bee and wait for the factory to close to walk home with the girls and gave my name as one of the girls. His statement as I read it in your paper, impressed me as being intended to convey to the minds of those heard it (…More
Second fall: Having succumbed to the subtle trap set by the Freemasons within the conclave, Pius XII’s successor set about subverting the entire conclave, an operation which succeeded, since the conclave in question continued against all expectations. Let us not forget, indeed, that the enemies of the Church have long dreamed of substituting a false pope for the true one, and thereby, without anyone noticing, causing the whole Church to fall into Apostasy. Their manoeuvre succeeded on 26 October 1958, and not only did the successor to Pius XII fall, but all the cardinals of the conclave fell in turn. Indeed, to have a false pope, it was necessary to turn a true conclave into a false one, and that was the conclave2. (Source: first comment)

Saturday, 9th August 1913 Confusion of Holloway Spoils Close of Good Day for the Defense, The Atlanta Georgian August 9th, 1913 What promised to be a very favorable day for the defense in the trial of Leo M. Frank, charged with the murder of Mary Phagan, was partly spoiled at its close Friday by the bewilderment of E. F. Holloway, day watchman at the pencil factory, in a maze of conflicting statements. Holloway's confusion under the fire of the Solicitor General was more than offset by the importance of the testimony which had gone before, two of the witnesses giving testimony which was intended to establish that Mary Phagan did not enter the National Pencil Factory on the day of her death until after Monteen Stover had come and gone. Besides giving the lie direct to Jim Conley's tale, this testimony, if it stands as the truth in the minds of the jurors, upsets the State's theory that Monteen Stover visited the office of Leo Frank while the superintendent was in the metal room with the …More
